Abstract:
Many time-dependent problems in science and engineering are described by nonlinear differential equations whose solutions are too complicated to be properly resolved and it is necessary to find coarse-grained descriptions of the original problem. The Mori-Zwanzig approach suggests a path of constructing coarse-grained models from a microscopic system. In this talk a review of the Mori-Zwanzig theory and the necessary steps for developing a coarse grained description of a microscopic system will be presented.
