Objectives

After successful participation in this course students are able to classify structures, describe them in terms of differential equations and understand their principal mechanical behaviour.

Description

Basics of continuum mechanics, tensor algebra calculus, dimensional reduction, classification of structures; differential geometry, governing equations, assumptions and structural behaviour of various structural models: truss, beams (Timoshenko beam, Bernoulli beam), in-plane loaded plates, plates in bending (Reissner-Mindlin plate, Kirchhoff plate) and shells; principle of virtual work, derivation of the weak form of the governing differential equations.

Prerequisites

TM1-3 or EM1-2 (MSE)
