Musculoskeletal Modeling
Renate Sachse, Laura Engelhardt
Movement disorders and mobility impairments due to injuries or diseases significantly affect the patient’s quality of life. Developing methods for an objective and reliable diagnosis, effective treatments and theragnostic approaches presents an important challenge, both for medical professionals and engineers. Tools to objectively and efficiently quantify the biomechanics of the impaired body part help in monitoring the patient’s response to the treatment and iteratively adjusting therapy where necessary.
Musculoskeletal modeling and simulation have great potential to examine the interactions between motion producing structures of the musculoskeletal system, identify causes and effects of diseases and differentiate various pathological conditions. Important applications include the improvement of diagnostic accuracy and injury risk identification in orthopaedics, the objective prediction and evaluation of (patient-specific) surgical and rehabilitation treatments and the design of assistive technologies and intelligent training devices for physiotherapy.
At the institute, we are working towards comprehensive musculoskeletal models of e.g. the shoulder.
