What's this course about?
In short, you will learn about the physics of fluids from the perspective of multiscale modeling. We will start off with the review of the classical Hamiltonian mechanics upon which the statistical physics is built upon. Employing the systematic coarse-graining, we will establish the links between the microscopic (molecular dynamics, kinetic theory) and macroscopic (continuum fluid mechanics and thermodynamics) theories. With this perspective in mind, we will then focus on the physical mechanisms of gasdynamic, boundary layers, and interfacial dynamics of fluid flow. How does it work?
Learn the basics
The theoretical background will be given in 2h/week lectures. The fundamentals are communicated via whiteboard and group discussion, slides are used to present a broader context, motivational examples, and historical background.
Apply to Problems
Exercise handouts are given beforhand. During exercise class TAs give you hints on how to solve them and explain any questions about previous exercise. Computational problems can be solved in any programing language, however, the solutions will be in MATLAB.
