Port-Hamiltonian Systems 2025
Spring School on Theory and Applications of Port-Hamiltonian Systems
23-28 March 2025, Fraueninsel (Chiemsee)
The port-Hamiltonian approach allows the structured modelling of complex, interconnected and heterogeneous multi-physical systems. It is the basis for control methods, which exploit the underlying physical structure or impose desired energetic behaviour in closed loop. The third edition of the international spring school PHS 2025 targets PhD students, PostDocs, and advanced Master students from engineering and applied mathematics, who are interested in the state of the art, current research topics and applications in the fields
- modelling of complex multi-domain physical systems,
- structure-preserving numerical methods and their use in control,
- novel approaches for energy- and entropy-aware and optimal control.
The school is organized by Paul Kotyczka (TUM), Bernhard Maschke (University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, France) and the Franco-Bavarian University Cooperation Center (BayFrance) in Munich, in cooperation with Birgit Jacob (University of Wuppertal, Germany).

Date and Venue
The school takes place from Sunday, 23rd until Friday, 28th of March 2025.
The beautiful Benedictine abbey of Frauenwörth is located on the small island Fraueninsel in the Lake Chiemsee, around 90 km southeast of Munich, at the edge of the Bavarian Alps, halfway to Salzburg.
Program and Speakers
The program contains lectures to introduce the port-Hamiltonian approach, advanced topics and application talks. A mini-course by Claudia Totzeck and Manuel Schaller introduces to optimization and optimal control for port-Hamiltonian systems. Participants bring a poster on their research topic, as a basis for the exchange with the experts in interactive sessions.
Find here the flyer and the final program.
Speakers (in alphabetical order): Alessandro Macchelli (Bologna), Arjan van der Schaft (Groningen), Bernhard Maschke (Lyon), Birgit Jacob (Wuppertal), Claudia Totzeck (Wuppertal), Denis Matignon (Toulouse), Hans Zwart (Twente), Hector Ramírez (Valparaíso), Manuel Schaller (Chemnitz), Michele Cucuzzella (Groningen), Pablo Borja (Plymouth), Paul Kotyczka (Munich), Stefano Stramigioli (Twente), Thomas Hélie (Paris), Yann Le Gorrec (Besançon).
Information for Participants
Poster Presentations
Bringing a poster to the school is compulsory for all Master and PhD students. Postdocs can bring a poster on a voluntary basis. Format: DIN A0 (or DIN A1 if at your convenience for the transport).
Please prepare a 2-minutes “elevator pitch” (a short oral summary to present your topic) to be held in the poster session on Monday or Tuesday.
Bus Shuttles
The following bus shuttles (bus company Krumrey) are reserved. If you have any changes regarding the use of the airport shuttle compared with your registration, please write a message to phs2025.rt(at)ed.tum.de.
Munich Airport - Gstadt Pier
Sunday, 23 March 2025, departure at 12:00 h
Gstadt Pier - Munich Airport
Friday, 28 March 2025, departure at 13:50 h
The travel time in both cases is around 1:45 h under normal traffic conditions. A site plan for the shuttle at Munich airport and emergency contact information will be sent to the participants.
Travel Information
If you cannot take the shuttle (as indicated in the registration confirmation):
From Munich Airport to Munich East Station (Ostbahnhof)
- Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for travel.
- Reach Munich Ostbahnhof via S-Bahn (S8) to change to the regional train.
- Check https://www.bahn.de/ for the connection.
- (Alternative in the case of problems on S8 is to go from the Airport to Munich Hauptbahnhof via S1 and change there.)
From Munich East or Central Station
- Take a regional train (direction Salzburg Hbf or Graz Hbf) to Prien am Chiemsee (approx. 55 minutes; hourly service) from Hauptbahnhof or Ostbahnhof. Check the connection on https://www.bahn.de/.
- From Prien station, you can reach Prien-Stock Harbor (Seestraße 108) by foot (approx. 20 minutes) or by bus.
- From Prien-Stock Harbor, boats to Frauenchiemsee Island depart hourly (approx. 30 minutes crossing time). Find the current schedule here: https://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de/fileadmin/user_upload/Fahrplaene/Web_Fahrplan_24-25.pdf. (The underlined tours start only on 1st of April!)
- Note: The last boat departs Prien-Stock Harbor at 6:30 pm.
If arriving by car
Drive to Gstadt/Chiemsee. Parking is available at the village entrance. Follow the blue signs for "Parkplatz Rappl".
!! Please allow sufficient time to reach the island !!
