By Train and other Public Transportation
You can reach our institute in Garching quite simply from the main train station in Munich by taking the S-Bahn and the underground (U-Bahn). From the main train station take any S-Bahn line in the direction of Ostbahnhof and exit at Marienplatz station. There, change to the U6 going to Garching-Forschungszentrum. Costs of transportation from main train station to the Institute:
For travelling to Garching and back, the Single day ticket Zone M-2 is the best value for money. With this ticket you are allowed to use the MVV public transport within the M and second zone until 6:00 the next morning (ref. zones of the public transport). The current price for this ticket is 9.50 €. An alternative would be the Streifenkarte ("stripe ticket") with 10 strips. It costs around 14.00 €. There and back, 4 strips need to be devaluated for each direction. When purchasing tickets it is, in general, advisable to have coins or 5 € or 10 € notes to hand.
Additional information can be obtained using the Electronic Schedule Information (EFA) (please enter the name of the station: Garching b. München, Station: Forschungszentrum as destination). This service provides up to date information on the public transport timetables of Deutsche Bahn and regional traffic (including S-Bahn, underground and busses). By Air and other Forms of Public Transportation
When you land at Munich international airport the best way to travel to our institute is to take the S-Bahn (Line 8) to Ismaning and then to switch to the bus (number 230) which goes to Garching - Forschungszentrum.
Costs of transportation from Airport to the Institute:
If you just want to travel to Garching and back to the airport we recommend you purchase the single day ticket for the zones 1-5 . With this ticket you are allowed to use the MVV public transportation in the zones 1-5 (outer district) until 6:00 the next morning (ref. zones of the public transport). The current price for this ticket is 10.60 €. A single day ticket for the zones M-5 is recommended if you also plan to travel to Munich city center. This ticket costs 13.00 €. For purchasing tickets it is, in general, advisable to have coins, 5 € or 10 € notes to hand.
Note:
Currently a single trip from the airport to the institute by taxi costs about 30 €.
By Car
When coming by car, the best way to reach us is by taking the highway A9 going east. Exit at Garching-Nord and drive along the Ludwig-Prandtl-Strasse until you reach the TU campus. You can find further information (exact location of the department and places to park) on the map below.
